US Closeup:
Presidential elections in the United States is conducted in a way that citizens do not choose their president directly, they, in fact, cast ballots for a slate of members of the US Electoral College. So the election of the President and Vice President is an indirect vote, in which money and media along with the Zionist lobby play the main role.
Foad Eizadi, Tehran University Professor, further elaborated on the latest status of the US Presidential candidates, saying Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts Governor, is Obama's rival in the 2012 Presidential Elections, and according to polls the two candidates are running neck and neck in 12 swing states, with Obama leading Romney with 1or 2 percent difference.
*US President Is Not Elected Through People's Direct Vote
Dr. Eizadi stressed that in the US electoral structure, the President is not elected with the nation's direct vote. He said each is allocated a number of Electoral College electors equal to the number of its Senators and Representatives in the US Congress. These representatives have in fact the right to vote and are those who will finally elect the president.
Tehran University Professor went on to say that the US Presidential Election is held on the first Tuesday of November and those with the right to vote for the president will hold a summit where the president will be elected. Thus, on Election Day when the popular vote is conducted by the various states and not directly by the federal government people will in fact choose the electors who will eventually elect the president. As Dr. Eizadi continues, under US constitution the candidate who gets the majority of the votes plus 1 or more in a particular state, he will gain the whole of the votes at that state’s Electoral College. For instance, if Obama gets 51% of the votes in a state and Romney gets 49%, or both get 50%,and one of them gets 1 vote more than the other, that candidate will have all the votes of the Electoral College.
Pointing to the Presidential Elections in the year 2000, Dr.Eizadi said, because of the indirect system of election, Al Gore got hundreds of thousands of more votes than George Bush, but finally Bush became the president. So it makes no difference whether a candidate wins with one vote at a state or gets 100% of the votes of that state, because finally he will win the whole of the Electoral College vote of that state. Or the reverse, if he is defeated with one vote less, he won’t win any vote at that state's Electoral College. That was why Al Gore had won more votes than George Bush in certain states, but these votes were of no use for him and were not of any help when it came to a hundred-thousand-difference with George Bush.
When asked what criteria will help a candidate succeed at the presidential elections, Dr. Eizadi said a research recently conducted in the US has revealed that in 96% of the cases a candidate with the highest amount of collected money has emerged victorious. He then pointed to the withdrawal of many candidates at preliminary elections and the fact that in the inner party elections of the 2012 presidential elections, there were at first 13 or 14 candidates, great number of whom withdrew from the elections. This is pretty strange because normally a candidate withdraws from the elections after knowing that he would not gain enough vote, but these candidates withdrew before even knowing that. And this is because that candidate has realized he cannot collect enough money, so he chose not to waste his time. So we see money talks in the US presidential elections.
Further elaborating on the importance of money in the US Presidential Elections, Dr. Eizadi said money is needed for the candidates’ campaign advertisements. In the year 2008, the US Election cost around 5 thousand dollars; the amount reached 6 thousand dollars in 2010; and the figure is predicted to reach 8 thousand dollars for 2012 elections. Surveys have revealed that around 60% of the money goes to the campaign advertisements for the candidates. And the figure stands very high in comparison with the US President’s income that stands at 400,000 dollars in a year. So a candidate must be either a millionaire himself or have connections among millionaires; otherwise he won’t be able to collect money for his campaign. So those not connected to the wealthy will be automatically disqualified.
The Iran-US issues analyst also pointed to the Wall Street Movement saying one of the issues being discussed by the movement is the role great amount of money plays at the. And since in the US Election system there is no qualification system, like the Guardian Council that we have in Iran to disqualify some candidates, it’s the ability of the candidates in absorbing money that is determining and those that cannot collect money will be disqualified.
*Israel’s Lobby, Both in Capital and in Media Sections is of High Influence.
Dr. Eizadi went on to say the second factor for a candidate’s success is “media support”, which as he stressed will have money poured in for the candidate. There have also been cases in which the candidate has been able to collect money, in one way or another, but since he has not enjoyed media support, he won't win. Because just like money that plays a key role in winning of the candidates, media, too, plays the role of a filter in the US political system. And the media itself, too, acts like a filtering apparatus. And those with no allegiance to the capitalist system will never be backed up by the media and will face resistance, even if they can collect money. Although the US media are in need of money and welcome money and provide more advertisements for those with more money, they do not allow just anyone into their system. This is one reason for the Israeli lobby to have high influence in the US. Because they are strong both in terms of money and in terms of providing media support. They can help those running for Presidential Elections directly or indirectly. They are strong in the area of media and have influence in the US media structure. So if they doubt a candidate's allegiance to the Israel’s lobby, they won’t help him.
*In US Congress Elections, only 2 to 10% of Representatives Are Changed.
The Iranian commentator on Iran-US issues, also referred to the impact of the American candidates’ lacking faith in the capitalist system saying, if a candidate has connections among those who provide financial assistance, enjoys high capabilities, and can accomplish whatever task he is asked to, then he will emerge victorious, otherwise he will face problems. Due to such a system, 90 to 98% of House Representatives come back to the House and remain in the system.
